Skylight and Velux window installation, replacement and leak repair for pitched and flat roofs.
Roof Skylights & Velux Windows in Fittleworth
Fittleworth customers looking for roof skylights & velux windows turn to West Sussex Roofing. A well-placed roof skylight can transform a dark loft conversion, bedroom or kitchen extension — bringing in natural light, improving ventilation and adding real value to a property. Installation covers all the leading skylight brands as well as bespoke rooflights for flat roof applications, and the installation is only as good as the flashing kit around it — the roof covering has to be cut back precisely to the window's dimensions and a purpose-made flashing kit dressed in around all four sides to tie into the surrounding tiles or slates without creating a new leak point. Existing skylights that have developed leaks can often be resealed rather than replaced entirely, which is usually the more cost-effective fix. Fittleworth sits above the River Rother between Pulborough and Petworth, a village long associated with artists drawn to its cottages and river-valley setting — a good number of traditional tile-hung and timber-framed cottages here, several Listed and some with thatch, mean roofing work is often heritage-led, matching hand-made clay tile and assessing timber roof structures on their own terms. The river valley and surrounding woodland mean properties tend to sit in more shade and higher humidity than the open farmland villages further south, showing up as faster moss and algae growth.

What Affects Roof Skylights & Velux Windows in Fittleworth
Housing stock
Traditional tile-hung and timber-framed cottages, several Listed, some with thatch. Loft conversions and skylight installations are common across both older converted roof spaces and newer builds, but the roof structure and covering around the opening differ by era.
Weather exposure
Inland — a river-valley village, no coastal exposure. A skylight is a cut-in weak point in the roof covering, so getting the flashing kit and seal right matters even more in wind-driven-rain and coastal locations.
Access
Wooded lanes typical of this stretch of the Weald. Skylight work usually means working from inside the loft as well as the roof exterior, so access to both needs planning.

Roof Skylights & Velux Windows in Fittleworth — FAQ
On a pitched roof, most skylight installations fall under permitted development provided the skylight doesn't protrude more than 150mm above the roof plane. Flat roof extensions, conservation areas and listed buildings may need consent — a local roofer will advise at survey stage.
The most common cause is degraded flashing kit around the frame. Replacing and resealing the flashing usually provides a permanent fix, though a corroded frame may need a replacement unit fitted instead.
It depends on the model, size and roof access. Book a free survey for a fixed, written price before any work begins.
